With Matt Stafford listed as doubtful and Cal Johnson as questionable for the Lion’s annual Thanksgiving Day match, odds are slim that the team musters up some of that old Turkey Day magic and ends their perennial hangover. In fact, with the way things are shaping up, there won’t be anything but the Lions to blame when you’re knocked out snoozing by the third quarter. In order to avoid a complete lost cause, the Lions need to start Drew Stanton over Daunte Culpepper.

Everyone and their mother know exactly what Culpepper is going to bring to the table at this point in his career. He is a veteran ball control quarterback, with minimal mobility left in his legs and above average arm strength, at best. While Culpepper is a free agent at the end of the season, Stanton is signed through the 2010 season. Jim Schwartz should start Drew Stanton and discover if he fits the bill of a future backup quarterback. If he plays poorly, then Mayhew and company can look elsewhere for a backup quarterback next year. But if he performs anything like he did in the preseason (arguably better than C-Pep), then Mayhew has one less position to fill on a roster that has holes like Swiss cheese. Bottom line, the former local hero might be able to attack the Pack’s top ranked rush defense with his youthful legs and give the Lion’s the most Thanksgiving excitement since Barry and Tur-Duck-en.
